5 Simple Ways to Help Get Rid of Roaches

In Blog, Homeowner Tips, Pest Control

Roaches are considered to be one of the most disgusting insects that can infest your home. They thrive in damp, dark, and dirty environments leaving behind their excrement and the possibility of disease. Find out what can help you get rid of roaches in your home.

Prevention

The best way to make sure cockroaches stay out of your home is to practice clean prevention methods. Roaches, for the most part, do not want to live in your home unless they are attracted by something. Getting rid of old food and drinks and maintaining a clean environment helps you not have to get rid of roaches later.

Boric Acid

One of the easiest ways to get rid of cockroaches is by killing them with boric acid. It can devastate a roach population while staying safe for children and pets to interact with. By distributing a thin spray of the acid in the right areas, the acid will then attach to the bodies of the roaches to be distributed to others.

Diatomaceous Earth

Using diatomaceous earth is like using boric acid in that you distribute a thin spray of the earth into the specific areas so that the cockroaches can pick it up on their bodies. The diatomaceous earth effectively sucks out the moisture from the roach thus ending in death. Another benefit is that diatomaceous earth can be purchased at a food grade level so that it is completely non-toxic to everything but the insects.

Cockroach Bait

Cockroach bait can be bought commercially as a gel that attracts roaches and poisons them. The bait continues affecting the roach population because the poison remains active once it becomes a part of their feces. Roaches eat anything including each other’s excrement. So, a little cockroach bait can go a long way in getting rid of a roach population.

Insect Growth Regulators (IGR)

By using insect growth regulators, you are effectively disrupting the natural life cycle of a roach. They prevent roaches from fully reaching adulthood and prevent eggs from hatching. The IGR does not kill the roaches so you would need to use an IGR along with another method to kill the one ones currently infesting your home.
